The Nike Air Max 97 "Seoul - On Air" is one of the winning designs from Nike's "On Air" collection of Air Max models. In 2018, Nike invited locals from Seoul, New York City, London, Paris, Tokyo, and Shanghai to design their own colorways on an Air Max model of their choosing. Eighteen finalists were then voted on by the public, with one winner selected from each city. Gwang Shin represented Seoul, South Korea with this Air Max 97. The unique colorway and construction is inspired by the city's large neon signs, the contrasting colors of the South Korean flag, and the flag's Taegeuk symbol that represents universal balance. The predominantly black panels of the upper represent the night sky in Seoul, with the translucent red and blue stripes and oversized Swoosh mimicking the look of neon signs.
